I have performed in the role of Incident Commander at many diverse and challenging incidents from domestic, industrial and commercial fires through transport and chemical incidents to the rescue of a Minke Whale from the banks of the River Mersey........I kid you not!!!

I have also performed all of the functional roles within the UK FRS Incident Command System including Silver Commander, Gold Command Liaison, Operations Commander, Command Support Officer, Sector Commander, Hazardous Materials & Environmental Protection Officer [HMEPO] and Detection, Identification & Monitoring [DIM] Officer. These roles, with the exception of Gold Liaison, have all been fulfilled at ‘live’ operational incidents.

I would describe myself as a 'person centred' manager whose character, knowledge, experience, intelligence, integrity and sense of humour afford me excellent inter-personal and communication skills. This enables me to equip and assist people to be

  • I have been a sector competent assessor for many years and have assessed Firefighters, Crew Managers and Watch Managers at Assessment/Development Centres [ADC’s] for the purposes of promotion.  I have also carried out many Operational Performance Audits on the incident ground and assessed Senior Officers against the UKFRS ICS utilizing the Vector Command System.

 

  • I have successfully coached, mentored and assessed five candidates through the Watch Manager NVQ Portfolio process.

 

  • I also hosted a group of Kuwaiti Fire Service Officers on a two week placement at the request of the Fire Service College.  This entailed arranging a training and operational programme for the delegates that would allow them to ride as Firefighters on front line appliances whilst ensuring all of their cultural and religious requirements were met in full.  The placement was extremely successful and I was commended by the Fire Service College.

  • Budget Management and Control of all capital and revenue budgets appertaining to operational equipment, clothing and consumable stores.

  • Service logistics and the testing, maintenance and repair of existing equipment.

  • Staff appraisals, development, training and discipline.

  • Health, safety and welfare of all staff and visitors.

  • Building/facilities manager for premises including vehicle maintenance & engineering workshops, equipment stores and workshops and clothing and consumable stores.

I was one of the substantive, founder members of this new team. My roles and responsibilities included;

 

  • Monitor, audit and review the performance of Operational Crews.

  • Focussed on core firefighting skills and knowledge and understanding of local and regional risks.

  • I was instrumental in devising, designing and the application of an auditing and monitoring model to identify poor performance.

  • Introduce remedial measures to assist Operational Supervisory Officers and their crews to achieve excellence in the performance of their roles, responsibilities and duties.

  • This involved acting as a sector competent assessor, a coach and a mentor.

  • Identifying and recognising excellent performance and 'best practice', trends and emerging Operational and procedural issues.

  • Ensure effective and timely feedback to every function of the Service ensuring that holistic, site and individual specific matters were addressed in an agreed and supportive manner ensuring a 'joined up' approach to performance improvement.

 

Station Manager: Operations; District Management Team

 

Member of a District Management Team responsible for;

 

  • Operational Preparedness of four Fire Stations.

  • Assessment and training of the Operational Crews.

  • Multi-agency partnership work.
